Precision Under Fire: How Mitigate Empowered HQPlantations to Protect the Tuan Mill

At FiSci, our goal is to turn complex environmental data into the kind of clarity that saves assets and protects communities. A recent fire incident near Maryborough provided a powerful real-world demonstration of this mission in action. By utilizing our Mitigate platform, HQPlantations (HQP) was able to move beyond reactive suppression and into a state of data-driven strategic control.

The Scenario: Threat to a Critical Hub

The ignition occurred in native vegetation north of the Hyne Timber Tuan Mill, a cornerstone of Queensland’s timber processing industry and a vital customer for HQP. With the fire burning in close proximity, the immediate concern was whether the blaze would track south toward the facility or deep into HQP's valuable southern pine compartments. In high-pressure fire scenarios, the "fog of war" often leads to difficult, high-stakes decisions. Without precise forecasting, teams might be forced to conduct emergency defensive "burn-outs" near customer assets—a move that carries its own set of significant risks.

From Prediction to Prevention

Working with the Mitigate platform, HQP Corporate Fire Manager Andrew Dunn ran a simulation for the forthcoming 16 hours. By ingesting real-time terrain data, fuel loads, and the specific meteorological conditions of the day, the platform provided two critical insights:

1. The Path of Least Resistance: The initial simulation showed the fire spreading in a westerly direction away from the Tuan Mill. This confirmed that, under current weather conditions, the Mill was not at immediate risk of being "burnt out" by the advancing fire front.

2. Tactical Validation: While the Mill was safe, the fire was still predicted to encroach on HQP's valuable southern pine plantation compartments. Andrew used Mitigate to model the predicted run of the fire to inform the Incident Management Team and on ground fire fighters on the most effective suppression strategies and tactics and resources required to control the fire. It was also used to locate potential fire breaks to the north and south of the projected spread.

The simulation (as seen in the tactical projections) showed specific breaks that HQP fire fighters could utilise over the predicted time frame of the fire to effectively bring the fire under control. It also contained fire behaviour information such as estimated rate of spread, fire intensity and flame height, information that is critical to fire fighters to ensure their own and the communities safety and to aid them in making decisions on how best to tackle the wildfire.

The Reality Check: Prediction vs. Observation

The actual fire footprint recorded by field teams. Note the high degree of correlation in both direction and intensity.

The actual burn area mirrored the simulation's projected path, validating the tactical decisions made in the early hours of the incident. This level of precision allows fire managers to allocate resources with surgical efficiency, ensuring that crews are exactly where they need to be, rather than where they think the fire might go.

Strategic Confidence in Action

This wasn't just a theoretical exercise. The HQP team took the data generated by Mitigate and applied the information into the Incident Action Plan. The result was a textbook success: the fire was brought under control with no impact on the pine plantation or timber mill thanks to targeted and weighted fire suppression action informed by the model, and with contingency in place should the fire have progressed to the full extent modelled.

Daniel Pfrunder, HQP’s General Manager of People, Safety & Risk, observed that the tool's greatest value was the "confidence" it provided to the executive team. With a clear 16-hour window of certainty, CEO Jason Wilson and the management team could stay the course, knowing their strategy was backed by science.

A Resilient Future

The Maryborough incident proves that the future of forestry safety lies in the marriage of field expertise and advanced simulation. By using Mitigate, HQP is ensuring that when the next fire starts, they aren't just reacting to the flames—they are ahead of them. We are proud to partner with HQPlantations as they lead the way in adopting data-driven fire management, protecting the environment and the timber industry for years to come.
